Poetry: Where have you gone?

Well hello little baby
Word less, emotion full

How did you become…

Our little one
Reaching for my hair, my eyes
Your arm around my neck

Where have you gone?

You, too, little girl
You who held my hand,
Told me stories
Wanted me, always

Where have you gone?

Say, big girl
You who grew so much
Learned so fast
Ventured out and returned:
“Mama! Look!
Let me show you how…”

Where have you gone?

Hey, beautiful teenager
Who travels
Farther and farther away
Whose words are sharp and soft
In equal and unexpected measure

Where do you go?
Could I visit you?
For a few minutes?
Please?

Watching you fly
You turn back to smile, share an insight
Express a concern, pet the dog
And remember:
Ah, yes!
My life.
Must go.
(I cherish these moments of forgetting)

From the beginning
I understood
We had only a few seasons
I tried to be awake in each moment
If I did it right
Maybe I would not miss you
Quite this much

Searching for something
I open one of your books
Age three
Rushes back
Scenes from another time
Never gone, only hidden

You are testimony
Of life’s eternal passage

I, too, am different now
We all are

Where have we gone?

Next

Your heart breaks
You call,
“Mama?
I need you
To come home
Now”

Raw pain
Of loving and losing
For the first time

I am honored
To be with you
In this tender space

We are right here

  2. Absolutely beautiful and immensely relateable as we, too, stubble and struggle through adolescence.

Is “Next” about a love lost? Did G and boyfriend part ways?

Please keep sharing. I may not always respond, but I always read your insightful, intellecutal, impeccable writings. oxxo Patricia

    • Thanks, Cheryl!
This time reminds me of a few times when G was little and I was so busy looking after her that I had no time to read a novel. Then she got wicked sick and I had the time to read…I said to the universe, “this is NOT what I had in mind at all. I don’t want to read that badly! Please make her well!!!” Hugs to you and your adorable grands! xo
